Craighead Horse Logging forms part of an established and professional woodland management and training company based in Dalry, Ayrshire. Ken Stewart explains why horses play and important role in his company.

There are few things in life that you remember as creating an immediate and permanent impression; for me one of these was the first Clydesdale horse I ever saw in our local agricultural show at about the age of 5. I never though for a moment I would become the owner of one 40 years later, let alone be one of the few remaining people in the UK to use one at work.

How it came about is a long story but the relevant part is that I run a small woodland management company and I became aware that a few people were still using horses in woodland. Not slow to see an opportunity – a few months later saw the arrival of Wesley – a 2 year-old Clydesdale gelding a set of harness, swingle tree and a cheap second-hand saddle.

With no prior experience of working horses, my education was rapid and the process did have its moments...
