Hosted by Midlands Carriagedriving, the British Young Drivers (BYD) will be competing for their 2019 National Championships at Onley Grounds Equestrian Centre, near Rugby in Warwickshire, on Saturday and Sunday, 3rd – 4th August.
Always a competitive event, these are Britain’s rising young stars with some already having international experience and World medals to their name.
Entries are arriving for the BYDs which has age classes from 10 years to 25. Among those intending to compete is previous BYD Champion Emily Viller. Emily, 21 and from near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, is a student midwife who manages her medical training with carriage driving after taking two years out. Mike Hodgson, who is also returning from time out, is an anticipated entry. Mike was well known for driving a team of Shetland ponies but is planning to bring his 5-year-old Dutch horse to Onley.
Alongside the BYD Championships, Midlands is running a British Carriagedriving Regional two-day event, whereby competitors can qualify for the main National Championships later in the month, and usual club classes.
Saturday is dressage and cones day – all laid out on flat arenas – while Sunday’s 12k marathon course extends around spacious fields utilising banks, gravel tracks and headlands. The six well-built obstacles will include one with water.
